I have a tree with a preservation order on it, how does that affect me?

Tree preservation orders are normally applied to trees that make a significant contribute to the surrounding area. As a result, they are mostly found on large tree specimens in conservation areas but that may not always be the case.

Depending on the tree proximity to the building and proposed building works you will most likely need to engage an Arboculturalist to produce a tree report prior to a planning application being submitted.

The report will outline the impact of the building works on the tree(s) and the mitigation measures needed to be taken during building work to protect the tree(s) from damage. As a result, it will more than likely add a cost to the build.

If a tree does have a preservation order on it, you are not allowed to reduce the crown of the tree by more than 25%. Any works required to be carried out in the form of pruning, removing dead or damaged branches requires an application. This should be submitted to your local council before works can take place.
