This 1960’s property in Harpenden had a leaky poorly built conservatory amongst a host of additions which meant the property wasn’t working for our clients and their young family.

Our client brought the property with the clear intention of turning the property into their long term family home with 2 young children to grow up in.
The house had a leaky upvc conservatory to the rear which meant that it was not used and gave a disconnect with the rear garden.
The bedroom accommodation had been poorly extended previously resulting in small oddly proportion rooms.
The appearance of the property was looking tired and dated and the client wanted to move on from the 1960s aesthetic of the house.
The existing loft space was a vastly under utilised space.
The resulting design looked to create a series of new spaces at ground, 1st and 2nd floor. Designed to create a unified appearance and create a finish through the use of materials and glazing proportions. The property when viewed externally now has a modern appearance. Tied together through the use of Charred timber (Shou Sugi Ban), and large format glazing.
The 2nd floor master suite contains a large ensuite, separate walk in wardrobe and main bedroom space which offers panoramic views of the Hertfordshire countryside. A frameless balustrade maintains unbroken views.

At ground floor the entrance hall was opened up from a series of enclosed porches to create a fluidity as you enter the house, and line of sight to the rear garden.
The ground slopes downwards as you pass from the front to rear of the site. To capitalise on this the rear extension has been lowered to create a flush finish with the external ground levels at the rear.
The rear extension rear as a set of double gabled buildings off set from each other. The ceilings are vaulted and fitted with rooflights giving an elevated feeling when you enter the space. The kitchen, dining and family living spaces occupy the extension.
Externally a combination of brickwork (matching the original house) and the charred timber give a distinct contrast in colour and texture with a modern refresh to an otherwise tired façade.
The existing concrete hung tiles have been replaced with charred timber to give an updated finish to the house from the street.
